Clinical Experiences of Inferion Vena Cave Ligation

David J. Seel
Abstract
This is a report of 6 cases of inferior vena cava ligation which were treated at the department
of surgery, Prebyterian Medical Center in Chon ju rom Feb. 1965 to May. 1970.
1. Totally 6 cases received inferior vena cava ligation under clinical diagnosis of septic pelvic
thrombophlebitis.
2. Main indication for vena cava ligation was prophylaxis of further devlopment of multiple
pulmonary emboli which presumed deep pelvic vein thrombosis as a source of emboli.
3. Anticoagulants, heparin or dicumarol, invested no definite clinical effects in 2 cases of candid
ates pre-and postoperatively.
4. In while series, we were liable to confuse chest X-ray manifestation with pleural effusion,
miliary tuberculosis, pneumonitis, atelectasis and pneumonia.
5. We encountered 2 cases of hospital death, not operative death, which was due to uremin and
pulmonary hypertension respectively. Another one deceased 10 weeks after discharge at home.
its cause of death was unknown.
6. Living 3 cases showed no evidence of postoperative sequelae in a follow up period until three
and a half years period.
